The Lord of the Rings" was written by J.R.R. Tolkien, and published in 1953. Tolkien wanted to release the book as one volume, but the publishers thought that the book was too large, so it was released in three volumes.

The three books, "The Fellowship of the Ring," "The Two Towers," and "The Return of the King," have since become known as the "Lord of the Rings Trilogy."

New Line Cinema has filmed a loose adaptation of "The Lord of the Rings," and will release it in three parts, "The Fellowship of the Ring" being released last November, "The Two Towers" this December, and "The Return of the King" next Christmas.
